Is Google One worth it? What one shared 2TB plan did for my family

The question "is Google One worth it" does not have a clean yes or no. It depends on the use case. For me, the answer landed on a quiet yes, and it started with a problem that had nothing to do with storage limits on paper.

A few of my family members kept running into insufficient storage. Their phones filled up, and with that, the little moments stopped being kept. Photos of ordinary days, the kind you only appreciate later, had nowhere to go. So I did something simple: I created one Google account, put a Google One subscription on it, and signed that single account into every device in the family. Phones, a tablet, laptops, desktops. Ten devices in total, one account holding the backups and the memories.

The effect was warmer than I expected. Because everyone now backs up to the same place, we look back at photos together through Google Photos. A birthday from months ago resurfaces, someone taps it, and the room laughs. That shared library did more for family closeness than any group chat ever did.

The practical side is just as good. Sharing is easy. The photo editor is easy, and the AI bits they bundle in (the Google AI Plus perks) genuinely make editing less of a chore. Touch up a shot, clear a stray object, done, without opening a separate app. For people who are not hobbyist editors, that is the difference between fixing a photo and leaving it broken.

But two things are worth saying out loud before you subscribe.

First, privacy. One central account means one account sees a lot of everyone's things. That works in my family because we trust each other, but it is a real trade. Each person gave up a slice of their own private space to gain the shared one. Know that going in.

Second, the trap. We are now at about 476GB used out of the 2TB, and that is exactly the comfortable corner a subscription wants you in. The more you store, the harder it is to leave. It is vendor lock-in, plain and simple, and 150k a month is the gentle toll. I am fine paying it for ten devices and a happier family archive, but I would not call it free of strings.

So is it worth it? For a family that shares devices and memories, yes, easily. For a single person who just needs a little more room, probably not at this tier.

One plan, one family: the storage is the easy part, the habit of keeping moments is the win, and the lock-in is the price you pay with open eyes.
